What is Wispecs?
Wispecs is a unique polymer complex developed using a specialized method called the solid-liquid interfacial contact technique. By combining two highly compatible synthetic polymers—poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)—under the specific conditions, we have created a new material with outstanding water absorption and bioadhesive properties.
Unlike devices derived from mammalian proteins, Wispecs is primarily composed of safe, synthetic polymers and contains no components of mammalian origin, thereby minimizing. risks such as viral contamination and unwanted immune responses. Both PAA and PVP are well-known for their use in pharmaceuticals and food, ensuring excellent biocompatibility.
PAA is widely recognized for its strong adhesion to mucosal surfaces and skin, making it an ideal material for patches and drug delivery systems. However, because it dissolves easily in water, its application as a base material is limited. By forming hydrogen bonds with PVP, we’ve created a gel that swells in water but does not dissolve—offering both functionality and stability.

The result is Wispecs: a next-generation material that can be dried into transparent films or sponge-like forms, and easily rehydrated back into a soft, adhesive gel. It swells quickly in water or alcohol and adheres well to biological tissues, making it highly suitable for medical and dental applications.
